Detailed Information on the Pedigree View

The Pedigree View shows the current individual plus three or four generations of parents. Above the current individual is a grid showing spouses and children. Below is a grid showing the brothers and sisters of the individual.

To the left of the main individual is a small button. This button is colored gray if there are no descendants linked to the main individual or blue if the person has children.

To the right of each person in the oldest generation is a small button. This button is colored gray if that person has no parents linked to him/her. It is colored blue if there are one or more generations continuing back.

Popup Information

If you move the cursor over any name on the Pedigree View for a second or more, a small information box pops up showing the date and location of the person's birth, christening, death and marriage. The box also contains three buttons:

The Edit button can be pressed to bring up the Information window where you can add or edit all the facts for the individual.

The Pictures button can be pressed to bring up the Photo Gallery where you can view, add and edit the pictures associated with this person.

The Notes picture button can be pressed to add or edit General, Research and Medical notes for the individual.

Note: The time delay before the popup information box displays can be set in the Options section. It can also be turned off, in which case the info box only displays if you click on the name.

Adding New Individuals

You can add parents to individuals in the Pedigree View. If the boxes for one or more parents of an individual are blank you can right-click on the blank box and choose Add Individual from the popup menu. This will display the Information window where you can enter all the facts for the new person.

You can add a new child to the main person on the Pedigree View by pressing the Add Son or Add Dau. button at the bottom of the screen. The Information screen is displayed and you can enter all the known information for the new child.

Tagging Records

You can tag individuals and marriages to mark them for various reasons. For example, you might want to tag some people to be included in a report, or tag some individuals that you are currently researching so you can find them quickly when you get more information. There are nine tags you can use for each individual and for each marriage. These are referred to as nine levels of tags. This lets you use different tag levels for different purposes. Perhaps you want to export all level nine tagged individuals, print an Ancestor report for all level two tagged people and use level one tags for names you are currently working on.

There are two steps involved in tagging an individual:

  1. Make sure the correct level is set. You can rotate through the three levels by clicking the Tag button on the main screen below the Pedigree View. As you click this button, the caption changes from Tag1 to Tag2 to Tag3 and then back around to Tag1.
  2. Click the tag box at the right end of the main name. When an individual is tagged, the tag box is filled with blue. When it is untagged, it is filled with gray.

Rotating Through Tagged Records

When you have more than one tag set for a particular tag level, you can press the right and left arrows on the tag level button at the bottom of the screen, to rotate forward and backward through all the individuals tagged.

Modified Date

Legacy keeps track of whenever an individual is added to the Family File and whenever an individual's information is changed. The date of the newest change to either of the current individuals is displayed in the bottom right corner of the Legacy screen. To see the full details, click on this date. The Last Modified window appears showing the date and time of last modification as well as the date and time of when the records were originally added.

Using the Right-Click Menus

Legacy makes extensive use of right-click menus to show you what can be done at any point in the program. By clicking with the right mouse button on a particular object, a popup menu appears with all the options available for that object.

You can select any option on the menu by simply moving the mouse pointer to it and clicking (either button). This is a very convenient and quick way to select commands and options. Although every command contained in the popup menu is available in some other way, either from a command button or from a menu on the menu bar, the popup menus gather together all the appropriate commands that apply to a particular situation.

Here are some of the right-click options:

4 or 5 Generations

The Pedigree View can be toggled to show either four or five generations at a time. Right-click on the background of the Pedigree View and from the menu, choose Toggle Display of 4/5 Generations.

Zoom Grid Lines

If you are using a high resolution monitor, you can zoom the Spouse/Children and the Siblings grids to show more or less names in them. Right-click on either grid and choose Zoom Grid Lines from the menu.

Changing the Background Color

You can change the color of the Pedigree View background to anything you like. Right-click on the background of the Pedigree View and choose Change Background Color/Pattern from the menu. From the Color Menu you can choose one of the preset colors or press the Define Custom Colors button to choose any color you want.
