Picture GalleryAdding Pictures

To add a new picture to the Picture Gallery, press the Picture button. The Load Picture dialog box appears, prompting for the path and name of the picture file you want to attach. (Whenever a picture is attached to an individual, only the picture file name is included in the Family File database. The actual picture file is not loaded.) When a picture has been selected, it is loaded into the Display Picture window where you can view it and add captions and descriptions. Pressing Close from the Display Picture window adds the picture in the next available location in the Picture Gallery.

Deleting Pictures

To remove a picture from the Picture Gallery, highlight the picture by clicking on the caption area below the picture and press the Delete button. Legacy prompts for confirmation and then unlinks the picture from the individual. The picture file itself is not deleted.only the reference link is erased.

Moving Pictures

You can move pictures from one position to another by dragging them with the mouse. Hold down the left mouse button over a picture and drag it to a new location. Letting up on the mouse button cause the two pictures to swap places.

Setting the Preferred Picture

The picture in the number one position is considered the Preferred Picture. This picture is displayed on the Family and Pedigree Views whenever the individual is current. The Preferred Picture is also printed on reports that include pictures. You can quickly move any picture to the head position by highlighting it and then pressing the Move To #1 button.

Displaying and Editing

To see an enlarged view of a picture, highlight it and press Edit. The picture is loaded into the Display Picture window. From there you can add a caption, date and description to the picture. You can also change pictures attributes such as brightness, sharpness and contrast and rotate and zoom the picture.

Print the Photo Album

To print all the pictures in the Picture Gallery, press the Print. button. The Photo Album Options window appears where you can select the type of photo album layout you want to print.

Sound

If you have a sound file attached to a picture, you can play it by pressing the Sound button.

Video

To add video to the Picture Gallery, press the Video button. The Load Video File dialog box appears, prompting for the path and name of the video file you want to attach.  Legacy supports loading and playing video files with a .AVI extension.

Slide Shows

To view a sequential slide show of all the pictures in the Picture Gallery, along with their sound files, press Slide Show.

Showing the Preferred Picture on the Family and Pedigree Views

Normally the preferred picture (the picture in position 1) is displayed on the Family View and Pedigree View. If you would like to turn off this feature, uncheck the Show Main Picture on Fam/Ped View box. This can speed up the display time on slower computers.

Re-sizing the Window

You can stretch the Picture Gallery window by dragging its edges and corners. The picture boxes automatically re-size when you do this. Legacy remembers the size and location of the window from session to session.

Displaying a PictureEdit Picture

The Display Picture window lets you view an enlarged picture and allows you to add a caption, date and description. You can also attach sound files, change the picture attributes and convert the picture file to a different format.

 

 

Loading a Picture

To load a picture into the main window, press the Load New. button. The Load Picture dialog box appears where you can specify the picture file you want to view. As you scroll through the available picture files, they are displayed in the right-hand window so you can make sure you are selecting the right one. Press OK when you have found the desired picture.

Color versus Black and White

Legacy supports the displaying and printing of both color and black and white pictures. Color pictures can be converted to gray scale (black and white) by pressing To Gray Scale. This is often necessary if you are printing reports with pictures on a non-color printer such as a laser printer. Color pictures sent to a black and white printer often come out looking muddy and washed out.

Supported Formats

Legacy supports the loading, displaying and converting of the following picture file formats:

  • Bitmap .BMP
  • PCX .PCX
  • Tiff .TIF
  • GIF .GIF
  • PICT .PCT
  • JPEG .JPG

Zooming In and Out

Use the Zoom In and Zoom Out buttons to vary the magnification of the picture. To adjust the size to exactly fit in the window, press Fit in Window. To view the picture at 100%, its actual size, press 100%. To zoom into a particular area of a picture, press Zoom Area and then drag the mouse cursor over the area you want to magnify. When you release the button, the area within the drag rectangle is enlarged to fit the window.

Printing the Picture

Press the Print. button to print the picture on your printer. A Print Size dialog box appears where you can select the size to print the picture. This can be from full page to 1/8th page.

Converting to a Different Format

After loading a picture, you can save it again in a different format. Press Save As. The Save Picture dialog box appears. Click on the down arrow on the Save File as Type combo box. Select the file format you want to convert to and then enter a file name. Press OK to complete the conversion.

You can quickly convert a picture to a Bitmap file by pressing To Bitmap., entering a file name and pressing OK.

Editing a Picture

There are several attributes of a picture that can be permanently changed. These include brightness, sharpness, contrast, rotation and color.

Brightness, Sharpness and Contrast

Pictures which look blurry, dull or washed out can be touched up to improve their appearance. Press Display Attributes to see the Adjust Display Attributes window. Adjust the brightness, sharpness and contrast controls and press Apply to see the effect on the picture. When you are happy with the changes, press OK.

Rotating, Flipping and Flopping

You can rotate the picture in 90 degree increments by pressing Rotate 90 Deg. This may be necessary if a picture was scanned sideways or upside down.

Press Flip to reverse a picture from left to right. Press Flop to reverse from top to bottom.

Converting to Gray Scale

You can quickly convert a color picture to black and white by pressing To Gray Scale.

Reloading a Picture

Sometimes the changes you make to a picture make it look worse rather than better. If you make changes to a picture that you don't want to keep, you can press Reload Original to reload the original picture from disk.

Playing Sound Files

If you have attached a sound file to the current picture, you can play the sound by pressing the Sound button.

Copying a Picture

You can copy the current picture to the Windows clipboard by pressing the Copy button. This makes it available for pasting into other Windows programs.

Window Size

If you would like the Zoom window to always be displayed as large as possible, covering the entire screen, select the Maximize option button. If you would like to control the size and placement of the window on the screen each time it appears, select the Normal option.

Saving the Changes

When you have made changes that you want to keep, you must save the picture to disk. Press Save As. and save the picture to whatever format you desire. This can be to the same format and file name as the original or to either a different name or format, or both.
