PLEASE READ: Windows 8, Windows 7 or Vista and Legacy Family Tree 6.0 and Earlier

If you are installing Legacy Family Tree 8.0 or earlier on a computer with Windows 8, Windows 7 or Vista, you need to be aware of the follow issues:

Installing Legacy

For Legacy Family Tree to run properly under Windows 8, Windows 7 or Vista, only install the Legacy program to the default C:\Legacy folder, rather than changing it to "C:\Program Files\Legacy".  If you install Legacy to the Program Files directory, you will discover that Windows 8, Windows 7 and Vista do not allow users to write files to that location.  Instead, Windows 8, Windows 7 and Vista redirects any changes to Legacy files to a Virtual Store folder, a location in the userís profile.  This creates serious problems, for example, if more than one user (people with different user accounts) attempt to work in the same family file.

Make sure the User Account Control (UAC) feature is enabled in Windows 8, Windows 7 or Vista. If this feature has been disabled, you need to re-enable it, otherwise you will get run-time error 339.

1. Open up Control Panel, and type in 'user account' into the search box.

2. Click on the link for Turn User Account Control (UAC) on or off.

Check the box, then click OK, and reboot your computer. Legacy should run properly now.

Help File:  The Help files are not being updated in Legacy 5.0 or earlier.  If you are using version 5.0 or earlier in Windows 8, Windows 7 or Vista, you must download the WinHlp32.exe patch from Microsoft in order to access Help.  Without this patch you will get an error message that says "Help file format not supported by Windows 8, Windows 7 or Vista."  Once the WinHlp32.exe patch is downloaded/installed you will able to open the Help files in Legacy, as well as other programs that are not yet updated, or that are not going to be updated.  This patch is not needed for Windows XP or earlier.

Please go to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/917607/en-us where you'll find information about this problem and links to download the WinHlp32.exe patch.  There are two options to download:

Windows6.0-KB917607-x64.msu For 64-bit Vista
Windows6.0-KB917607-x86.msu For 32-bit Vista

Using Different User Accounts:  If people are using Legacy 6.0 or earlier in different user accounts in Windows 8, Windows 7 or Vista, when you go into Legacy after switching accounts, you'll need click Options and select Customize > Locations.  Next click on the Reset button next to the "Location of temporary files" field before creating reports, or doing a Check/Repair, etc.  If you installed in Admin account and are using Legacy strictly under the user account, go there and click on the Reset button to set the path to the correct Temp folder.  This does not apply to Windows XP or earlier.
