How to add new columns to Legacy’s Index View

An email to one of Legacy's mailing lists this morning provided a great use of the Index View columns. Mary wrote:

One of the columns I've set up in the Index view shows the relationship to me (if any), of each person in my database. It's a very quick way to see if I'm related to a particular person or family and I use it constantly. In fact, I've come to rely on it so much, I think I'd be lost without it.

Legacy Family Tree's Index View is the alphabetical listing of everyone in your family file. Here, you can display up to 15 different columns of information. The default columns display the RIN, Full Name, Sex, Birth Date, Birth Place, Death Date, and Death Place. To add a new column, follow these steps:

In the Index View, click once on any of the column headings. This opens the Index View Columns screen.
There are 15 openings for information. To add a new column, click on the button with 3 dots.
Here, there are 104 different fields from which to choose. Click on the desired field, then click Select. The new field now appears in the list. The fields can be arranged using the arrows in the lower right.
Click Close. The new field(s) now appear in the Index View.

If, after adding the new field, it is not visible, click on the right arrow at the bottom to scroll to the right. After scrolling to the right, you might not be able to see all the information on the left, such as the name. The solution to this problem is one of Legacy's greatest secrets. I have found that I can change the size of the columns by clicking on the header line. But can someone tell me what the relationship* means?

How do you change the size of columns in the index view? I wanta to reduce the size of several and increase the size of the Relationship column, which I just added.

I’ve just added the relationship column and it’s really great. I knew that some people were distant cousins or ancestors, now I know who is who and the exact relationship.

I was able to create the new columns and it worked like a charm. My problem is that I would like to make some of my columns smaller. After reviewing the video, I was able to make some of the columns smaller, but unable to fix all of them. I know you need to be at the beginning of the line to drag it, but am unable to find the right place on my screen. Any help would be appreciated.

Hello Darlene. I also had this problem. Here is the solution.
Can you see TABS for: Legacy Home, Family, Pedigree, Descendant, Chronology, INDEX — that is it!
Once you find that, the rest of the instructions are great to follow. HTH. Ray.

You can save up to 10 different sets of index view column headings. Customize them for different purposes and switch between them by clicking on the index column headings and choosing the set you want.

Can I print this list oor export to Word or Excel?

Does Legacy have a “fixed” numbering system option (instead of “sequential” numbering) for continuing pages on cascading pedigree charts as PAF has? If so, where do I find that option?

Ok, now I get it, it isn’t the regular index of names with which I would LOVE 15 openings but the index tab. Oops

I’m not usually this dense when it comes to computers, but I still can not get 15 openings. I have version 6.0.0.155, and in my index I only have 8 openings to make a choice of what data shows. If I click on the boxes with the 3 dots I can change what is displayed, but can not add the number of openings, it also does not look like above. Instead of saying Index View Columns mine says Customize Display. What am I missing?

Carol, in the Index View Columns list where you can select the fields you wish to show, 15 fields are showing. The first seven that are filled in are defaults, but those can be changed to any other field by clicking on the button with the three dots, just as Geoff explained in his article.
The only difference between Deluxe and Standard for this view is that in the Standard Edition, you can show only RIN, Full Name, Sex, Birth and Birth Place showing on the Index tab.

I added two fields to the INDEX screen using the directions explained :Relationship and Age at Death. The Age at Death field fills with detail but the Relationship field does not. What am I missing?
