Legacy Update Now Available PLUS Bonus Webinar on Friday, March 9 – Navigating the New Census Tools in Legacy Family Tree

We have an exciting new update for you (free!) which adds the new "who-was-alive-in-the-1940-census-or-in-any-other-census" tool, otherwise known as the new Census List tool. This new feature is available in both the free AND the deluxe editions of Legacy. It will create a Search List or print a report of everyone you should look for in a census.

Bonus Webinar

PLUS – Sign up for tomorrow's bonus webinar, "Navigating the New Census Tools in Legacy Family Tree" to learn all about it. Here's its description:

Legacy Family Tree recently released three major census tools to assist genealogists in their census research. While the first two tools relate specifically to the upcoming release of the 1940 U.S. census (new 1940 U.S. census transcription form and 1940 U.S. census SourceWriter template), the third will help with census research around the globe (the new Census List tool). Join Legacy's Geoff Rasmussen, the brains behind the new Census List tool, as he explores these new features and demonstrates their use.

The live webinar is scheduled for Friday, March 9, 2012 at 2PM Eastern U.S., so register today to reserve your virtual seat. Registration is free but space is limited to the first 1,000 people to join that day. Join at least 15-20 minutes early to ensure your virtual seat.

What's New in this update

Census List Tool. Cool new tool to create a Search List or print a report of everyone you should look for in a census. We have the settings for several countries and each of their census years. But, this tool is really a lot more than that. You can find a list of people who were alive at a particular date – for example, during a war or other event where you would like to go search for records of your ancestor. Have fun!

Works great for finding anyone in a state census too! Just type in the state, the year, and now you know who you should look for.

After installing this update, look for the new Census button in your main toolbar:

Census2

Or just click on the Search button, then click on the Census List tab.

Phyllis – When you choose the census year the date field should automatically fill in. If it is blank you get a blank report. I ran into this myself.

Phyllis – give it another try. Select United States from the drop down list. No, you shouldn’t have to have the country as part of the location field but I’ll ask the programmers about “USA.” In the next free update the help file will be updated to include everything about the topic.

Alan – there is an option to include “Married Names for Wives”, as well as “Include Alternate Names” and “Include Surrounding Relatives.”

I’m not able to download the update right now but I’m wondering how does the list deal with women. Does it show them by their maiden name (how they are recorded in Legacy) but with a note as to what her expected married name would be to search for in a particular Cennsus?

So how does it work? I clicked on Census List tab. It was pre-filled with United States and 1940. Clicked on Create the List or Report: and it says there are no records found that match the search criteria.
Out of almost 2500 people on my tree, there is NO ONE who lived in 1940? according to this Tool? NOT!
I’m expecting this Tool to give me a list of everyone in my tree who was living in the United States in 1940.
Am I supposed to have “United States” in every location field instead of “USA”?
The Help feature on the Tool window gives Help for the entire program, not just the Census Tool.

John – that will be coming in a future update.

Looks good. A really great idea!!! Thank you. 🙂
Is it possible to to eliminate those ancestors that I have already documented with a specific Census?

Lucy – make sure you have at least version 7.5.0.165. If you do and you don’t see the census button in the main toolbar, right-click on any of the buttons in the main toolbar, select and move the Census button up, and click OK.

I downloaded this update (Deluxe Edition user) but the Census button didn’t appear anywhere.

Hope you use the War of 1812 as an example in Friday’s Webinar.
