Tuesday’s Tip – User Defaults

Legacy - User Defaults

Tuesday's Tips provide brief how-to's to help you learn to use the Legacy Family Tree software with new tricks and techniques.

User Defaults

When you go to Options > Customize you have 12 sections of options. Each option is marked (gbl) or (ff). (gbl) means this is a global option and will affect every family file you have (if you have more than one). If the option is marked (ff) then that option will only affect the current file you have open and you will have to set it for each file you have (if you have more than one).

Once you have your options set exactly like you want them, click the button at the bottom "Options for Default Settings" and then you have three options to save your settings…

  • Save ALL current settings as User-Defaults
  • Save current GLOBAL settings as User-Defaults
  • Save current Family File Settings as User-Defaults

I do have more than one file and I want all my files to be set up exactly the same way so I click Save ALL current settings as User-Defaults. I then open my other files and go to this same button and click Reset to User-Defaults.

This comes in handy not only to get all of your files set up a certain way but if you ever want to play around with the settings you can easily go back to your defaults. You can also reset back to the Legacy-Defaults if you wish.

When I export information from my Legacy file to a .csv file I put my dates in a different format so that I can sort them in Excel. I can change the format temporarily and then with the click I can go right back to my normal settings.
