Tuesday's Tips provide brief how-to's to help you learn to use the Legacy Family Tree software with new tricks and techniques.

Internet Toolbar (Beginner)

Some users don't realize that the Web Pages Creation Tool is on the Internet Toolbar. The first five icons are the five different styles of web pages you can create. Creating web pages is very similar to creating a report. The screens will be familiar to you. Please note that you must have your own web space on the Internet and you must use an FTP client to upload them. Some web servers have built in FTP clients but if not, we recommend the free FileZilla program. This is what we use here at Legacy.

This isn't the only way you can do web pages. You can upload a gedcom to any of the "tree" websites. Another option is to use The Next Generation of Genealogy Site Building (TNG). You must have your own web space for this one. This is the program that the Guild of One Name Studies (GOONS) uses for their member websites. Many GOONs use Legacy. Your web space must have PHP/MySQL capability. TNG does offer web space.

The Search the Internet is a great time saver. Legacy will auto fill in all the fields that that particular website needs. There are many default websites already programmed in for you but you can also add your own. For more information on that please consult the Help File.

For some reason users miss the little down arrow next to the Find a Grave icon. There are some very useful searches here.

I was looking at it in regard to Legacy tasks. Once you get out of Legacy it is out of my jurisdiction so to speak. Creating webpages is set up just like reports so it is pretty basic. Creating a gedcom is pretty basic as well. The instructions on how to upload to one of the “tree” sites are on those tree sites because each site is a little different. Same with how to upload to your own website. I mention the FTP client just to let the user know one is needed (unless the website has a built in one) but the website provider will have the information and will have step by step instructions.

I would not label this tip as “beginner”. It often seems a computer person thinks their readers know how to get to the point from which they start and what their jargon means.
You state that you must have your own webspace. What does that mean? Is that a URL? A website? You use the acronym FTP without defining it (I know what it stands for but that does not help me understand its relationship to the tip). You say I can also upload a “gedcom”. Are to referring to a gedcom data file?
There is also the basic question as to why I would create a webpage. I guess the people who want one know why they want it.
The Find a Grave drop down arrow was a good beginner tip.

Some day I would love Legacy to provide a file that is ready to load into a WordPress Blog. I currently have to create an RTF file open in Word and save without RTF formatting then cut and paste text and footnotes separately into my blogs (2). Its very time consuming and mildly frustrating in a “there has to be a better way” kind of way. I’ve tried just pasting the RTF file but WordPress won’t recognize the footnotes and the formatting tends to be iffy.

I find Legacy very usefull
