Tuesday's Tips provide brief how-to's to help you learn to use the Legacy Family Tree software with new tricks and techniques.

The xDNA Chart

The xDNA chart isn't a separate chart but rather it is a new color scheme.

Open Legacy Charting

and choose the Half Fan Chart

Now go to Appearance > Color

and choose DNA X Chromosome from the drop down list. You can change the default colors in the chart if you like.

Then under Actions choose "Apply Color Theme to Chart"

Yes, an xDNA chart looks different for a male vs. a female. A male inherits an X chromosome from his mother only so there will be no xDNA coming from his paternal line. A female inherits an X chromosome from her mother and from her father so her xDNA will come from both sides.

Figured my problem out, I think. Because I’m a male my xDNA is only coming from my maternal side of the family.

I tried this out by the chart only colored in the maternal side of my chart.
Any thoughts?

Roberta,
You don’t actually need to import your DNA information. This shows DNA inheritance which is different than talking about your specific DNA from Ancestry.
Let’s say you wanted to figured which of your ancestors you inherited your xDNA from. For you, you received your xDNA from both your mother and your father (because you have two X chromosomes). Your mother received her xDNA from both her mother and her father. But your father received his xDNA from only his mother (your father has XY chromosomes. He got his Y from his dad instead of an X). And you keep going backwards like this to determine where your xDNA came from.
This xDNA chart colors your genealogy fan chart for you to show you who you have inherited your xDNA from so you don’t have to calculate it out manually.
Does that make sense?
