Top Features

Legacy Family Tree is packed with features genealogists love. From 100+ reports to dozens of tools, you can find it all in our free Legacy software.

Legacy searches the key websites for your ancestors (while you sleep!) – FindMyPast, FamilySearch, GenealogyBank and MyHeritage. You can find missing info, pictures, and events to add to your tree.
Reports and Charts
Share your legacy with 100+ stunning charts and reports. Create a wall calendar, a FAN club report, an Origins report, or publish an heirloom family history book.
Preserve and organize your treasured photographs, audio recordings, and videos. Then show them off in a Photo Album, wall chart, or the Family Picture Tree.
Genealogy Tools
All genealogists will enjoy Legacy's SourceWriter, the Chronology and Descendant Views, the To Do List, Hashtags, Color Coding, and so much more.
Legacy’s SourceWriter
Will help you prepare properly formatted sources regardless of your expertise. Simply fill in the fields and Legacy creates the footnotes, endnotes, and bibliography for you, following industry standards.
Preserve the stories of your ancestors, or your own stories. The Stories tool lets you record, organize and print multiple stories for any of your ancestors.
Publishing Center
This tool lets you select one or more reports and combine them into one large book report. All the information from the various reports are indexed and sourced together and a master Table of Contents is also generated. You can also add an intro page to the beginning of the book.
To Do List
A Legacy favorite – use the To Do List to keep track of your research tasks. Add your own, or Legacy's Research Guidance tool will analyze your ancestor and create your To Do List for you!
Chronology View
The researcher's best friend. Legacy creates your ancestor's timeline, helping you see patterns and areas where your ancestor needs more research. You can add in historical timelines so that you know what events were going on that might have affected their life.
Create unlimited hastags to describe your ancestors. Then search for or print a report of everyone who shares that hashtag.

After comparing a LOT of products, Legacy is a standout – well done!

Thank you for such a wonderful Genealogy tool. My database is quite large and I have tried 7 different similar programs all of which claimed to handle large databases but NONE did. Not only did Legacy handle my database but did so quickly smoothly and with GREAT results looks absolutely WONDERFUL especially the web pages Legacy produces. BRAVO to all involved in the creation of Legacy.

Legacy is by far the best and most versatile genealogy program I have used! I now have the ability to do the myriad of things I could not do with the all the other programs put together. Just wishing I had found Legacy sooner!

Legacy has opened up brand new avenues of investigation and made some connections I had not noticed before. I have recommended the programme to every one I have met in the genealogical community. All I can say is WOW and keep up the hard work.

How do I display two different Family Files at the same time?

You can have two different Family Files open at the same time. This is a great way to compare files. To add a second Family File, first, select View / Split Screen from the Menu Bar and click the Yes button when prompted to open a second file. Next select the other Family File you want to see from the Open Family File window. You can then click between the two Family Files and all menu and toolbar commands work with the currently highlighted file. You can even drag-and-drop people from one file to the other.

How do I combine two people into one?

From time to time you will find two (or more) people in your Family File that you feel are really the same person. You can easily merge the two by pressing the Merge picture button on the toolbar. The Merge Two Individuals screen appears with current person loaded on the left. If this is not one of the people you want to merge, press the Select Left button and choose the correct individual from the Name List. Next, press the Select Right button and choose the other person. When the two have been loaded, you can see the differences in information and choose which pieces you want to keep. To actually merge the two individuals into one, press the Merge Right Individual into Left Individual button.

How do I calculate the birth date from a person’s age when they died?

The information found on a gravestone will often include the date of death and how old the person was when he or she died. From this age information you can quickly and easily calculate the birth date. To do this, press the Calendar button on the toolbar to display the Calendar window. Click on the Date Calculator tab and then enter the date the person died in the Death Date field. Now enter the age of the person in the Years, Months, and Days fields. To figure the birth date, press the Calculate button. The birth date appears in the Birth Date field.

Can I print a report of all the names I entered today?

Sure. This is done through the Search screen. Press the Search button on the toolbar to display the Search window. Click on the Detailed Search tab. Select Individual in the Look for Who? combo box. Select Added Date in the Where to Look combo box. Select Equal To in the How to Look combo box. And finally, fill in today’s date in the What to Look for text box on the right. Now press the Create List button on the bottom. A list will be created containing all the individuals you added today. You can then print the list by pressing the Print… button.
