Legacy follows standard Windows file naming conventions. A file name can contain up to 255 characters, including spaces. It cannot contain the following characters:
β
\ / : * ? " < > |
β
Although Windows file naming conventions allow for a periods ( . ) we discourage their use, except to separate the extension from the file name proper (for example, Smith.fdb).
β
Periods in included within the file name (for example, Thomas W. Smith.fdb) can "confuse" the program when trying to create backups or GEDCOM files and generate error messages.
