The Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) was established by Royal Charter in 1917. Its task is to mark and maintains the graves of the 1.7 million men and women of the Commonwealth forces who died in the two world wars, build memorials to those who have no known grave, and keep records and registers of the war dead.
Its database, known as the Debt of Honour Register, lists details about the 1.7 million men and women of the Commonwealth forces who died during the two world wars and the 23,000 cemeteries, memorials and other locations world-wide where they are commemorated. It also contains the details of the 67,000 Commonwealth civilians who died as a result of enemy action in the Second World War.
