Tuesday’s Tip – Printing a Duplicates List

Tuesday's Tip - Printing a Duplicates List

Tuesday's Tips provide brief how-to's to help you learn to use the Legacy Family Tree software with new tricks and techniques.

Printing a Duplicates List and some other options

A lot of people overlook the fact that you can print the possible duplicates list. The reason it is overlooked is that the print option is BEFORE you actually run the Find Duplicates routine.

Go to TOOLS > MERGE DUPLICATES > FIND DUPLICATES

This is where the Print option is. If you click PRINT it will run the routine and then give you option to print the report. Most people will click CONTINUE and then find that they can't print a report from the Merge screen.

Another thing that is overlooked is that on this same screen (where Continue and Print are) there is an OPTIONS button. There are some powerful options here 🙂 You can restrict the Find Duplicates routine to your current search list, you can restrict it to tagged individuals and you can tag the output from running the Find Duplicates routine.

If you are having a problem with the program crashing you need to send an email to support@legacyfamilytree.com so that we can help you there.
Having said that, you can create a search list using the following criteria:
    Individual > Surname > Starts with > S
Now create the Search List and then close the Search List. Now open the Find Duplicates screen. Click the OPTIONS button. Now restrict the search to your current Search List (first option on this screen).

When I prepared a potential duplicates list virtually all of the names appeared creating a PDF of 1895 pages. Only names I had previously said were not duplicates were absent. The search criteria was 6 letters. When I asked for more filters the program crashed (3 times). Is there a way to set the program to look for surnames beginning with an opening alpha string? For example only surnames beginning with “s”. That would be of tremendous help.

    WR,
That is the way the developers set it up. It actually makes sense when you compare it to the other reports. As soon as you click on one of the reports, the Print button is on that first screen, before you actually generate the report.
Having said that, if you would like a print button on the second screen, you can send that in as a suggestion here

If you send it in this way it will get logged into our tracking system

Very valuable tip. Why not put the print option earlier in the decision tree?
