Legacy Family Tree has a new home with MyHeritage

Millennia-Photograph

Pressing the “Publish” button for this blog post was one of the most exciting, nerve-wracking, and exhilarating things I’ve ever done and is indeed the biggest step forward we’ve ever made with our company. You read the title correctly – we have merged with MyHeritage.

While Legacy has a new home – everything is staying the same…just better. In our new home the walls are whiter, the ceilings are taller, and the views are greater. Putting aside the analogies, our Legacy software and webinar series will continue just as they always have. But from this point forward, we now have access to the manpower, financial resources, and a customer base of more than 91 million users. We now have everything we need to ensure that Legacy and our webinars will continue to flourish in the years ahead.

Below you will find the official announcement plus answers to questions we thought you would have.

=====

Dear Legacy user,

We are proud to share with you the biggest step forward we have ever made with our Legacy Family Tree software and our FamilyTreeWebinars.com webinar series. We have entered into an acquisition agreement with MyHeritage, a leading global destination for family history and DNA with 91 million users in 196 countries. The acquisition will provide the resources and cutting edge technologies to advance and expand both our #1 rated software and our #1 rated webinar series. Think Legacy is good now? Watch out future – here we come!

How will all this affect you? Entirely positively. Here’s a flavor of what you can expect in the future:

  • A host of new features in Legacy software – we will be developing future versions of Legacy together. We have already started working on the new Tree Sync feature (to optionally have your Legacy file in a private or collaborative tree at MyHeritage)
  • Improved webinar platform to surpass the 1,000-virtual seat limitation we currently have
  • Significant discounts on MyHeritage services and DNA kits for Legacy users and webinar viewers not available anywhere else
  • Most importantly, you can expect the same high-quality support and service that you have come to expect from us. The entire Legacy and webinar teams will continue on at MyHeritage in our existing roles.

“The more I’ve learned about and experimented with MyHeritage, the more I have felt we need to partner together,” said Geoff Rasmussen, founder of the FamilyTreeWebinars.com webinar series and “the face” of Legacy Family Tree software. “The technology behind their online trees and historical records is incredible – second to none. MyHeritage has positioned itself to become the leader of the future of the genealogy industry and we can be a part of it. It’s the perfect match – our software and webinars combined with their resources, technologies, and international reach will help both of us accomplish our mission – to help the world find their ancestors.”

Just as we are excited to contribute to the success of our new owners at MyHeritage, they, too, are anxious to elevate our Legacy software and webinar series to levels that have been beyond our reach.

To celebrate the acquisition, we are offering a limited time, never-offered-before discount on Legacy 9 software and annual webinar memberships. Through Sunday, August 13 (Geoff’s birthday), take 50% off:

Legacy 9 software – from $34.95  $17.48

1 year webinar membership (or extension) – $49.95  $24.98

Click here to get Legacy software or webinar membership at 50% off.

Thank you all for your continuing support as we enter this exciting new chapter in the Millennia story.

Best regards,

Dave, Ken, Geoff, and everyone at the Legacy Family Tree / Millennia team

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Is this a friendly or hostile acquisition?

A. Friendly, in every way. Both parties were keen on doing it and consider it a great combination. MyHeritage is interested in expanding its services to the Legacy users; and after operating independently for 20 years, Legacy is interested in the stability, financial security, and expanded technical resources that MyHeritage provides.

Q. Why did Legacy sell to MyHeritage and not to someone else?

A. The Legacy founders Dave, Ken and Geoff saw MyHeritage as a perfect fit, a company that shares their vision and care for genealogy. Another potential buyer, Ancestry.com, shut down their Family Tree Maker product, later found a buyer for it in Ukraine, and then sold it off. We wanted to ensure that our future partner had as much care for our software and our customers as we do. MyHeritage believes that genealogists deserve to be cared for and continues to maintain and improve its own desktop software, Family Tree Builder. They were the best fit.

Q. What happens with the Legacy Family Tree team after this acquisition?

A. MyHeritage is retaining the entire Legacy team and giving them better terms so they could focus on improving Legacy. No more accounting and payroll for Dave! No more server maintenance headaches for Ken! They can now concentrate fully on improving Legacy without the countless distractions a small business has to cope with. Just like Geni — MyHeritage acquired Geni 5 years ago, and many of the original Geni team members are still on board today and have been happily improving Geni ever since.

Q. Is MyHeritage acquiring Legacy Family Tree in order to kill it?

A. No. Legacy Family Tree will continue and is already planning together with MyHeritage the next version, Legacy 10.

Q. What will Legacy version 10 include?

A. It's still being planned but one of the contemplated features will be a tool to optionally to sync trees with a private or collaborative tree using the MyHeritage tree platform.

Q. Will Legacy version 10 support Unicode?A. Sadly, no. That would require a complete rewrite of the Legacy software from scratch and such a rewrite is not planned. Version 10 will include improvements and features requested by users, not inside-out changes.

Q. Will Legacy users enjoy any benefits from this acquisition?

A. Yes! Legacy users will receive discounts on MyHeritage DNA and MyHeritage subscriptions not available to anyone else, and which have never offered before – anywhere. These will be announced separately next week. Additionally, Legacy is celebrating the news by offering discounts on Legacy 9 to everyone, starting today.

Q. What will happen to the Legacy webinars after the acquisition?

A. MyHeritage is planning to improve the webinars. For starters, deploy improved infrastructure that allows more concurrent users. MyHeritage will promote the webinars to its own users and increase their audience, and will have more resources to bring on speakers, who will receive more exposure thanks to the increased audience, and higher royalty rates. The webinars will remain as Legacy webinars, managed by Geoff. They will not become a voice of MyHeritage. Although they are expected to include more content about MyHeritage than before, the webinars will continue to include a wide range of topics of interest to genealogists.

Q. Is MyHeritage changing things around at Legacy?

A. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. This is MyHeritage's approach with Legacy. Minimum changes. MyHeritage did ask Legacy though to stop selling external products unrelated to genealogy such as magnabrite readers, to improve focus.

Q. Will Legacy continue to participate in genealogy shows/seminars?

A. Yes.

Q. Will Legacy operate the cruise promised for 2017?

A. Yes.

Q. I have another question not listed here. Where can I ask it?

A. We'll host a webinar about the acquisition in a few more weeks, and anyone is welcome to join, ask any question and get candid answers.

For me a Mac version would be the best improvement you could offer. I like Legacy so much that I currently have to run a Windows virtual machine on my Mac and it is the only software I use in Windows. My only hope it that you don’t bring out a Mac version that is 2 or 3 versions behind the Windows version in terms of features. If you are going to do a Mac version, please bring out a version with all of the features found in the Windows version. I would prefer to wait a year to get an equivalent product. Thanks!

Marcellyn – in Legacy, the option to backup to your USB drive is still there. You can change the location of the backup to any location of your computer, including external devices like a USB drive.

I am excited to see how the two softwares work together as I use both and have stopped using Ancestry.com last year just because it is getting too expensive to carry both Ancestry and MyHeritage every year. I have been waiting for Legacy to be available on my Mac for a long time and that is the only reason I still use am keeping a PC and not totally using the Mac, I also do not want to use other software on my Mac to make it act like a PC as it could invite more opportunity for viruses.
Congratulations and Happy Birthday in advance Geoff.

I’m so excited!! I just purchased Legacy 9 while watching Dear Myrtle. I was able to import my Master Genealogy data with no problem. I had another program and it would not import. I was not happy!
Thanks so much for making this possible!

I am with Nancy’s concern about the Cloud. I know the Cloud is inevitable but in the meantime can you please add (and keep) the option to use USB backup for one’s database? There needs to be some alternative to have backup separate from that which is on the computer besides the Cloud. Due to some past experiences, I do not trust the Cloud and want to keep all my data within my four walls.
If you have other suggestions for saving data somewhere, I’ll listen but it has to stay within my home for personal reasons. I am not anti-progress but this one issue I am currently a “stickler: on. Thank you.

I am so looking forward to the Mac version of My Legacy. I am now considering signing up for a My Heritage membership. I saw a demonstration of the Legacy software six months ago as I had previously purchased Legacy but couldn’t use it on my Mac. I look forward to future changes!

The future of desktop software is to say the least, limited. Legacy had to find a partner among the online services to keep developing. Why you bother making a new desktop version for Mac is beyond me.
This said I hope all integration with MH will be optional. It seems online services have user volume as priority one and not being too concern with documentation and sources. I would hate to see my genealogy work warped into fantasy by information supplied by people I never invited to do so.
    Good luck!

I have been with Legacy through many version updates, and it is my favourite programme by far. Unfortunately, I have not had a very good experience with Heritage myself, so I am a bit nervous. Nevertheless, if Legacy has considered all aspects of the acquisition, then I wish them well for the future. My only niggle with Legacy at the moment, which never made sense to me, is the fact that the do not recognise the need for two necessary individual events. Namely, Buried and Cremated. At the moment you have to choose either Buried or Cremated.
I have many ancestors who were cremated in the area in which they finally resided, but their remains were returned for burial in the family tomb or grave in the Church of the village or town where they were born or baptised. I sincerely trust this anomalous situation will be rectified in the course of the merger.

SO glad to see your reassurances, Geoff, that Legacy Family Tree will remain a standalone product (unlike Thomas’s prediction that it will become subscription-based). If that happened, I would be priced out of being able to afford it, just like I have been with Ancestry.com.
Also I’m encouraged to hear that the highly-anticipated Mac version is on track and (possibly?) coming soon. Thomas’s other (to me, dire) prediction was that a subscription-based online version would obviate the necessity for a native Mac version. Thanks for the reassurance, Geoff, that that’s not the direction Legacy is taking!
Happy Birthday, Geoff, and keep up your great webinar work!

I’m a little leery just like some of the other commentators. I do like Legacy (it’s the program I finally settled on after trying practically all other programs) and hope that MyHeritage is not doing the same thing Ancestry.com did with Familytreemaker. They only bought the program to kill it and force people to their online products. I like to keep the program and my information on my computer and publish information I want to publish on my own website using TNG (The Next Generation).

Like some others who have commented, I am very concerned about one of the most important features of Legacy which does not have the same priority in My Heritage. This, of course, is the lack of Sources in many of the postings to My Heritage and the fact that these often show up either in e-mails and now on Legacy 9 as possible matches. At first, I carefully reviewed hundred of suggested matches only to find that only one or two of them had any reliable sources. This has been a waste of precious research time and futile searching for sources for the suggested matches. Legacy/My Heritage needs to distinguish between a sourced match and an unsourced match to allow the user to decide which ones to pursue. I am surprised that Legacy has joined with My Heritage as Legacy was one of the few genealogy software programs that was very strong on sources and spent quite a bit of time and effort developing the templates from Evidence Explained by Elizabeth Shown Mills. I hope you will use your relationship with My Heritage to encourage appropriate sourcing (especially where match-selections occur). And I hope that you will continue to strengthen the excellent source incentives in the Legacy software.

Should I upgrade to 9 now on my PC or just wait for the Mac version? I’m so excited to finally get everything on my Mac!!!!! Also, will the Mac version also be able to link with the Families app?

  • GR

Ann – yes. To transfer your Ancestry tree, at Ancestry.com, go to Trees > Create and Manage Trees > Manage Tree link > green Export Tree button. This will download a GEDCOM file. Then, open Legacy, go to File > Import > GEDCOM and follow the steps there.

Nancy – you can feel comfortable that nothing is ever automatically transferred to the Legacy Cloud. The Legacy Cloud is only a backup mechanism whereby it will create a backup file of your Legacy file and back it up to our secure servers. Once there, it is only accessible by you. But you have to manually initiate the process and even create an account if you want to utilize it. I hope this helps.

  • NR
    Nancy Rogers

I really need to know if the current Legacy 9 or the new Legacy 10 is set up in a way that the tree’s I am working on are not automatically posted to any form of the Legacy Cloud. I do research for several other people who do not wish to have their information or their families information on the internet. Also I like to be able to work on my various families when my internet connection goes down.

Need to add these items to list
Ged Match to DNA tests, when I’m talking about a button, I should have made clear, We need two, one to pull up all our DNA matches to a list and one to show we have a DNA match to that person in the tree. When you have DNA over 3 or 4 sites and you are finding matches, it is hard to keep it straight. My tree has over 240,000 people between my husband, our children, grandchildren and my self.
Hope this addressed in the future.

Hope this is a great merger. I would like to see a way of adding DNA findings to My Heritage like we have in Legacy. Would also like to see a new Button in Legacy for DNA matches, right now I add DNA to the given name field.

I was a “Test Drive” participant for Family Tree Maker by MacKiev as well as a Beta tester for RootsMagic 7.5 in their move to sync with Ancestry. I’ve also been a user of both Legacy and MyHeritage and was debating dropping FTM and perhaps RM as they both have changed and made some things much worse than they were before. MacKiev had promised a new release of FTM back in March, which just happened last month. They seem to take a long time for releases.
RM made merging of duplicates a horrendously difficult process if you have more than 2 or 3 users to merge.
Looks to me like the Legacy/MyHeritage merger came along at just the right time for me. As soon as this is posted I will be cancelling my subscription to Ancestry.

Going forward the highest priority issue for me is the proficiency, coordination, synchronization, tools, interaction and collaboration between Legacy and FamilySearch FamilyTree. I care far more about this than any interface between MyHeritage or any other commercial site.
The better that collaboration is between Legacy and FSFT, the happier and satisfied I will be and the more likely I will continue to be an enthusiastic advocate and customer of Legacy in to the future.

I uploaded a ged.com to Myheritage.com only to find it has a limited number of people. My Legacy database has over 100000, and I believe Myheritage has only 30000, so I had to go to direct line only which isn’t what I wanted. I’ve used Legacy almost since its inception. I’ve recommended it to so many friends and relatives. I loved Generations (for Mac) but when I went to Windows, I couldn’t use it and I sincerely dislike FTM, so I found Legacy and was thrilled to find how similar it was to Generations-totally intuitive. I’m not thrilled with the acquisition and I have a paid account at Myheritage.com. I find them less than useful, especially in the amount of data they display and their matching services. They put up matches, which may be partially correct- right person, but person but some incorrect data, so you have a choice of confirming it or not- not correcting it. They have people born in counties that did not exist at that time, etc. Its maddening. I hope they make their number of individuals in a tree unlimited, as Legacy does. I’m sort of bummed I just upgraded to V9 with book and CD, and now v10 will be coming out. I hope you all can change things over there. I’m not changing software but they really need to change their documentation, their matching (f you’ve done DNA) and a several other things. Please

While I’m not crazy about My Heritage, there are a few aspects of their Family Tree Builder program that I like.
The tree consistency checker is great. I have to say, it found several instances where a person was double linked and was their own ancestor. Legacy has no method that I’m aware of for finding mistakes like that. It also finds people who are “older than their parents”.
Their Privacy options let you get very granular with what you allow. Even down to allowing or hiding ‘facts’ (events in legacy) for an individual or globally.
I also like how there are more formatting options in the notes, such as numbered lists, bulleted lists, indent, etc.
In the program’s options – there is a setting to use the Spanish tradition which creates a child’s name based on father’s + mother’s surnames. Totally handy!
I hope Legacy can incorporate some of these useful features!

  • DB
    Daniel Baker

I am encouraged at the thought of collaborative tree. I really really hope it materializes. I have not been connecting with My Heritage, so cannot comment as others have. I do “second” another’s comment: “Please, please use the capability of storing the data in the cloud as an opportunity for several people in the same family to tie in their Legacy Software to the same cloud data.”

  • KK
    Kay Kitchen

Sounds good. I am not a huge fan of MyHeritage because Ancestry.com is a cleaner and easier programme to use. However, noting comments that people just click on matches on MyHeritage I just found on Ancestry.com a poor lady who had either 30 or 32 children, depending on the tree and also that her husband married 3 times and had 11 children from the 1st marriage and 18 from the second and was so exhausted by the time he married for the third time that he didn’t have any more children. There was actually only one marriage with 12 children. We are talking about the McLeans and McKinnons who came from Coll, a small Hebrides Island and they did intermarry quite a lot so it does get a little tricky to sort out. This was the time of the Highlands Clearances and most of them were dirt poor and underfed so I can’t imagine how she had the stamina to have 30 odd children, let alone feed them. I think she did really well to have 12 children.
I also found a lady born in 1863 who had a son born in 1601 – now that’s a neat trick. So it’s not just on MyHeritage that crap happens. Actually, I do find the MyHeritage matching process a little daunting and that is probably why people just tick a match.
I usually don’t watch too many Legacy videos or get too many books because lots of them relate to USA and I live in Australia and my ancestors came here from England, Scotland and Ireland. The ones I have watched have been excellent. There are enough videos to entice me to take up your wonderful offer and I really need to take a fine tooth comb to my tree so putting it on Legacy is probably the best way to do this. I have looked at several tree programmes over the last year or so and have been undecided as to which one to get. Now I have ordered the deluxe Legacy version – your offer was too good to refuse – and I will use the opportunity to fine tune my tree.
Keep up the good work and hoping the merger goes smoothly.

    Hi,
GENI is owned by MyHeritage. I have recently copied my DNA-data into GENI and enjoy searching GENI’s world-wide ancestor trees. My heritage has for some time had tempting offers to copy DNA data the their database! If GENI and MyHeritage are already collaborating why should one have his or hers DNA data in separate databases? Or are they really separate? I have so far not utilized Legacy’s DNA-option. My DNA tests originate from FamilyTreeDNA. So ones you have done your DNA test in a large enough company, which are the best options to use the gained information with the merging family-tree vendors?

    Geoff,
Congratulations and I hope that this acquisition exceeds everyone’s expectations.
You said that in order for Legacy to support Unicode it would have to be rewritten from scratch. Sherry has posted on the Legacy Support list-server that VB6 doesn’t support Unicode so Legacy’s software programmers would need to learn a new language and rewrite it from scratch. Are you aware that there are at least two companies (CyberActiveX and Hexagora) that have products that integrate into existing VB6 programs to provide Unicode support so that the underlying software doesn’t have to be rewritten? These products are used by many international companies (IBM, Cisco, Toshiba, etc.) for this very purpose.
Again congratulations and I hope that you will reconsider adding Unicode support to Legacy.

Geoff, I am thrilled to hear that the Mac version of Legacy is high on your “To Do” list. I have been a loyal Legacy user for many years and have urged others to purchase it. Lately, since I added the Legacy 9, my Mac Air has been bogging down with Fusion and making my whole computer run slower and very much hotter. Also, I have been unable to use the Legacy hints and other features. This will be a most welcome addition to your Legacy offerings!

I wish you well in this new step and I hope this works as well as you anticipate. I like the idea of greater resources and improved product focus. I hope the feeling that genealogists “deserve” a product like Legacy persists. I have truly been impressed with the Legacy product. The Legacy crew has been great!
I worry that support for Ancestry (including FindAGrave) data and FamilySearch data will be reduced because they could be considered “competing” products. That could be an understandable view from a corporate standpoint, but most of us don’t see these databases that way. I don’t pay subscription fees on an either/or basis. They don’t provide quite the same data and have different user communities. I would hate lose any Ancestry/FindAGrave compatibility or communication the Legacy Family Tree has developed. Legacy’s independence was a comfort. I never felt that Legacy was developed to lean toward any of the online products and I would hate for that to change – even a little. “Hints” linking to online databases are just that: hints. Legacy, as an independent database, is where I keep my work “clean,” and never worry about how those hints are related to other researcher’s habits or meticulousness. Grateful for the hints, I will prove my own work and store it in Legacy where only I can alter it. That way I can still enjoy the hints that arise from other people’s discoveries…even if they don’t pan out.
In short, I guess, I hope Legacy does not become centered around theMyHeritage databases. I like the idea of adding capability, but do not want to lose the connection with Ancestry, FindAGrave or FamilySearch (which clearly a very different product.). Legacy’s independence and ability to work with multiple online products is a very important part of my enthusiasm for it.

Geoff – I agree with all the comments about the lack of resources on MyHeritage – and I’m one of their full members. Because of that, I really ignore their “smart matches” and am very careful about their other “matches”. Perhaps you can get their managers to attend some of your webinars to see what genealogists really need. Their research area of books and documents is pretty useful, however.

As a webinar subscriber since the early days, I have learned, and continue to learn, so much. Thank you for the generous celebration offer -( I hope it will add onto my existing subscription ?).
However, as a Mac user, I have to admit to “Legacy envy” while waiting with my fellow “Apple minority” with such anticipation at the prospect of a Legacy program for us, too. Hoping to finally join in fully…soon.
We have also benefitted from Legacy webinars partnering with BCG, and offering their webinars urging us to the highest standards in our efforts (especially if we are not pursuing certification, we need standards). Perhaps with the help of BCG we’ll see the end of unsourced postings/trees .
For future planning, consider incorporating features/structures in the software program that would support these specific standards – resulting in better outcomes for all of us, and future generations.
Hoping for the best from this new partnership ~

I must be the dummy here, I have both Legacy 9 and MyHeritage, to me both offered solutions not found in the other or so it appeared. Will they remain separate entities or comnine so I don’t pay for two subscriptions?

  • DJ
    Dorothy Jackson Reed

How exciting! The Wonderful Legacy team has their work cut out for them. Looking forward to all the innovations ahead!

  • CZ
    Clyde Ziegler

Nothing but congratulations to the Legacy founders. A dream come true for them I am sure. I suspect many of us Legacy users who are subscribers to Ancestry will re-evaluate. I am really hoping that this merger/acquisition will be one of the few exceptions to the rule that says that mergers eventually fail.

  • CS
    Curt Swisher

Fantastic–Less than 1 hour and 1/2 after reading the post about the merger, I switched from a monthly webinar membership to a yearly one (been wanting to do that for a long time) as I couldn’t pass up this great offer. Essentially for this coming year I saved over $95.00, and if the price of the annual webinar doesn’t increase, I will continue to save almost $70.00 each succeeding year. Too good to not take advantage of.

  • K
    Kate

My original tree is with My Heritage, I am not financial with them at present as I found the cost a bit high. I moved to Legacy in the last year and am using version 9 I like what Legacy gives me and will look forward to seeing what sort of cost I will be expected to pay to become a My Heritage user again. Time will tell (I was happy with them before but cost is a factor)

  • DC
    Don Carlson

Outstanding. Legacy has a unique LDS Family search process which is superior to any I have seen
    Awsome

  • JG
    Janine Guimont Cotugno

Will Legacy still have Your free edition available? Will we still be able to update to the newest version of the Legacy free edition when updates are made?

  • GR
    Geoff Rasmussen

Jon – yes, Legacy 8 will continue to work. However, it’s been a while since we’ve issued any updates for it and will continue to only issue updates to our latest edition, as has always been our practice.

  • JL
    Jon LPatton

I have been a Legacy software user for many years. nowWill Legacy
ver 8 continue to be supported. including up-dates?
Legacy 8 will serve my requirements very well.

  • GR
    Geoff Rasmussen

Ross – we’re always looking ahead and working on the next version. Whenever 10 comes out, yes, it will continue to optionally connect with FamilySearch.

  • RD
    Ross Dietrich

Seems like IU just purchased version 9, now you are talking version 10? Hope there will be discounts for version 9 owners. Also did not see any mention about will it still sync with Family search?

  • GR
    Geoff Rasmussen

Nancy – I’m not sure – we’ll have a few, they may have a few. I’ll have my wife though, so I’m not thinking too much about others yet.

  • GR
    Geoff Rasmussen

Lene – so…is what you are saying is that you might want a Mac version? 🙂

  • NC
    Nancy Chaussee

How many of both sides of the new family be on board for the 2017 cruise? Congratualtions to all.

  • GR
    Geoff Rasmussen

Hi Charlotte – yes, the special offer can also extend your current membership. Happy birthday next week to you as well!!

  • L
    Lene

A MAC version of Legacy is super important to me – and it appears a lot of other people looking at the comments above. This ia a petition – We want a MAC Legacy! …. and when do we want it? NOW!!!

  • GR
    Geoff Rasmussen

Hi Pam – great thoughts. I think you’re going to really enjoy what’s coming. The problem for me is that I won’t be able to say it was my idea because MyHeritage already has ideas that will make your request a reality. Find lots of ancestors, okay? 🙂

  • GR
    Geoff Rasmussen

Deborah – v10 likely won’t happen for a little while. On average, each version of Legacy has taken 2-3 years to produce, but with free updates in between. Version 10 probably won’t be that long, but you’re welcome to spin the wheels of v9 for free (standard edition). Best wishes!

    Mary Lovell

Mac version? Oh please be true! I would come back to Legacy in a heartbeat!
Loved the webinars, subscriber for several years, but dropped membership due to not feeling it as relevant as no longer a Legacy user. – will definitely come back if a Mac version is developed!
Oh…. not sure if development could implement, but is there a possibility of being selective in what is uploaded or downloaded from My Heritage to the the Legacy program on home computer? Nice feature found in a program associated with Ancestry.
Legacy Team — thank you so much for the wonderful news of hope!

  • C
    Charlotte

Hi Geoff – I’m already a loyal Legacy 9 user and webinar subscriber. Can your special offer on the webinar memberships be used to EXTEND my membership? Hope so! (My birthday is next week too – hint, hint). Congratulations on this merger. I hope it works out just like you are expecting!

  • P
    Peg

Can’t wait for the Mac version!

  • PS
    Pam Shoberg

    Hi Geoff,
I’m so glad to hear that you will continue to do the webinars. And, thanks for the 50% off. I think I’ll take you up on that. Now… if you could only convince MyHeritage to match your 50% off on their products as well. They doubled my fees that last time they renewed me, so I cancelled my subscription, to become effective at the end of this year. But… if you have any influence over that company, I encourage you to challenge them to lower their prices on renewals.
    Thanks.

  • GR
    Geoff Rasmussen

Jean-Yves – good question. As long as Family Tree Builder can import a GEDCOM file, which I suspect it could (haven’t given it a look yet), then you’d be able to import a Legacy-created GEDCOM into it. Give it a try and let me know how it goes.

  • DD
    Deborah DeCarlo

I was contemplating v9 but with v10 coming from myheritage do you think there will be really good prices at that time to “celebrate”? maybe I should wait for v10?

  • GR
    Geoff Rasmussen

Larry – no, your Legacy software will not expire, nor will it require you to have a membership to continue to use it.

  • JF
    Jean-Yves Fournier

Would My Heritage facilitate the transfer from Legacy to its Family Tree builder, including the transfer of any attached document and photo?

  • GR
    Geoff Rasmussen

Tammy – nothing will be shared unless you manually, intentionally share it. Yes, privacy is important.

  • GR
    Geoff Rasmussen

Jenny – yes, when we complete the Mac version it will work with Apple.

  • GR
    Geoff Rasmussen

Dennis – I would think so. Give it a try. But don’t tell too many others. 🙂

  • GR
    Geoff Rasmussen

Jan – you really, really made my day with that. Thanks so much! Yes, I’ll still be at the reigns of the webinars. I’ve loved every minute of it the past seven years and look forward to many, many more!

  • LW
    Larry Wold

I just became a member of Legacy and have been a member of Heritage for quite some time did Ijust waste my money for Legacy as I bought rhe unlocked version so now when my Heritage expires will I have to renew that to?

  • T
    Tammy

I’d like to have PRIVACY with this merger. I don’t want any information to be viewable if I mark it as private. That includes the names of pictures that might identify living people. My Heritage makes too much public.

  • GR
    Geoff Rasmussen

Dennis – I think that dream has potential for reality. But it will only be an optional feature for users. I love the concept as well.

  • GR
    Geoff Rasmussen

Nancy – absolutely! Legacy is still, and will continue to be, a standalone software program.

  • J
    Jenny

Will this allow Legacy to work with Apple??

  • GR
    Geoff Rasmussen

Donna – I, too, was bummed when they dropped the newspaper account (a year ago or so?). I’ve heard a bit about what’s coming and for my research at least, it’s going to be a big welcome addition.

  • DM
    Dennis Maness

Can we use the Webinar code to get an additional 10% off the wonderful 50% off of the webinar membership? Thanks.

  • JD
    Jan Dean

As long as Geoff keeps moderating the webinars, I’m happy with the merger. Geoff is so upbeat with such wonderful enthusiasm that even if my day isn’t going well, his voice immediately makes the day brighter. Happy Birthday early, Jeff!

    Dennis Cake

Please, please use the capability of storing the data in the cloud as an opportunity for several people in the same family to tie in their Legacy Software to the same cloud data. Imagine if each in the family could automatically have access to the same data base as they do research. We can only dream of this.

  • NH
    Nancy Hamel

Will I still be able to use/upgrade Legacy even if I don’t subscribe to MyHeritage? I like to access MyHeritage, Family Search, and Ancestry but don’t keep my tree online. Will this be a problem?

  • D
    Donna

Does this mean I should hang onto my MyHeritage account? I wasn’t that thrilled when they dropped/lost the newspapers records so I was going to drop them come my renewal time. Now, I don’t know. I absolutely love Legacy, the support we get from them in the Facebook group, and the webinars.

  • GR
    Geoff Rasmussen

Elizabeth – the MyHeritage site has free and paid resources. You can still use Legacy as you always have though without any additional fees.

  • GR
    Geoff Rasmussen

bjernigan – yes, we can see you. 🙂

  • B
    bjernigan

Please, please make a Mac version of Legacy! I’m on my knees-can you see me?

  • EJ
    Elizabeth Jones

Will we now have to pay a membership fee to Heritage to use the site and resources?

  • GR
    Geoff Rasmussen

Hi Phyllis – yes, the documentation in MyHeritage has a great start and room to improve. We’re looking forward to sharing what we’ve developed with them as well.

  • J
    Jay

Congrats Legacy! Finally we can expect a faster track on the many varied and needed software improvements that many of us have been waiting on for years!!
NOW is the time to make our voices heard to the new management and ensure these software issues get top priority!

  • PF
    Phyllis Fields

I am concerned about the manner in which My Heritage documents sources. Will this feature be as in My Heritage or will it be like Legacy? I am very careful about documentation and have found My Heritage users to be less than careful, preferring just to “click matches” as opposed to comparing source documents. Ancestry is the ultimate in providing this service. My Heritage needs to adopt a similar method. I frequently copy or copy and paste a document, story with sourcing, or picture to a person in my tree. The info is then there for that ancestor, not just a “source site” where you have to track down the information. I like Legacy and hope they have morfe influence than My Heritage with this merger.

  • ES
    Elissa Scalise Powell

Sounds wonderful for each company and for the consumers to combine resources! Thanks for the great sale too! I look forward to working with Legacy and MyHeritage in providing more quality webinars. Looking forward to my December 27 webinar “Problems and Pitfalls of a ‘Reasonably Shallow Search'”

  • J
    JudyD

Dearly love Legacy! Not a fan of MyHeritage. All I’ve ever found on their website are other people’s unsourced family trees. Surely hope this goes well and that you have a rock-solid agreement for this merger.

  • BH
    Becky Heginbotham

A MAC version would be so beneficial to me. Hope we can see that very soon!

  • DK
    Dave Keeney

Congratulations Legacy. Congratulations MyHeritage. I am very hopeful that this will make both better, which is not something I can say about too many mergers.
Looking forward to see improvements in both!

  • GR
    Geoff Rasmussen

Robert – yes, this will be an option to transfer this information between Legacy and MyHeritage.

  • RJ
    Robert James Cuttance

I have been an avid supporter of Legacy since Legacy 7, and are impressed with Legacy 9’s ability to search MyHeritage. With the rebuild of Legacy will we be able to transfer all our other data i.e. photos, documents, stories and news paper articles when we add BDM information to MyHeritage and FamilySearch?Robert

  • SH
    Susan Howard

I’m with Thomas, my one wish is that the Mac version is put on a fast track to release. Congratulations to both Legacy and My Heritage!

  • MW
    Malcolm Williams

Only time will tell whether this merger is a good thing – sorry, I am a little sceptical of mergers. I do hope to remain a loyal supporter of this software (still have my copy of Legacy 2) but there are many aspects of MyHeritage that I do not like, despite being an account holder.

  • CF
    Corinne Fordschmid

Soooo glad you didn’t merge with a.com! Love MyHeritage. I’ve always felt that MyHeritage, and most certainly Legacy, were much more about supporting and promoting the building and sharing of family history. All the blocks and stops that a.com put up in order to make you pay makes me feel as though they are just about the money! Congratulations and good luck.

  • GR
    Geoff Rasmussen

Thomas – we talked with MyHeritage about the Mac version just this afternoon. Yes, it’s high up on the list. We’re almost done with it. Yes, we’ve been saying that for a while, but this acquisition will hopefully give us more time to work on Legacy instead of all of the other things that come with developing Legacy AND running a business. 🙂

  • JH
    Julie Huber

I LOVE Legacy, just not sure about the merger with MyHeritage as I am NOT a satisfied customer with them AT ALL. But I look forward to seeing what can happen, but I am NOT promising anything as MyHeritage just seems to want to ‘add’ people and not keep things from the public eye.

  • RR
    Ruth R Butcher

My Heritage has a limit of 30000 people in a tree…not acceptable….need unlimited
Legacy has a limit of 60 people in a family……needs to be unlimited

  • TM
    Thomas Muetze

Will Legacy now support native Mac version.. That would be the biggest improvement for all of us that use Mac OS.

  • SO
    Sue O'Neill

I’m already a huge fan of Legacy and Legacy products/webinars! Congratulations on the merger! Looking forward to what’s ahead!
