Tuesday's Tip - "Hidden" Tools (Beginner)

Tuesday's Tips provide brief how-to's to help you learn to use the Legacy Family Tree software with new tricks and techniques.

"Hidden" Tools (Beginner)

Legacy has a couple of nifty navigational tools and one informational tool on the Family View that new users don't see right away. If you hover your mouse in special spots on the screen you will see colored bars appear. These bars will let you rotate between spouses, siblings, and parents (if they have more than one set) without having to open those dialog boxes.

Scroll through husband's spouses

Scroll through husband's parents

There is one other helpful "hidden" popup on the Family View.

Modified dialog box

When you click this colored box you get a very handy popup that shows you when the husband and wife were added to your file and when they were last modified including their marriage information. It will also tell you if they were imported into your file or if you added them by hand.

These "hidden" gems will save you time navigating through immediate family members and knowing when you added someone or last modified them is always interesting information. Here is a bonus hint. If you go to Search > Find > Detailed Search you can find people that were added or modified on, before, or after a certain date.

    Frank,
You won’t see the parent bars unless the person has more than one set of parents.

I find all of the “hidden” bars except the two for Parents — there are no mouse-over bars there.

    Gary,
You can change the color by going to Options > Change Colors

My “colored” hidden bars are white!

Correct. It rotates through them in order. If you need to see them all at one time so that you cam flip back and forth between them, click the small icon in the upper right corner of the Children’s List and that will bring up the full list of children (siblings).

All very well – but why can’t you go ‘backwards’ on the children, or rotate the children? If you click on either of the ‘hidden’ white vertical bars either side of the screen, it just takes you down generations via the eldest child. There is no quick way to go back upwards again – and the LHS & RHS white bars do exactly the same thing. Interesting facility – but could be much more useful!

Wow – I had no idea these “hidden gems” were there. Thank you very much.

All of this is very helpful, thank you.
It would be even more helpful if Legacy were available on my Android ipad. I mean properly available in the same way that Ancestry and Find My Past are available.
