Tuesday’s Tip – Who’s Missing? (Beginner)

Who's Missing?

Tuesday's Tips provide brief how-to's to help you learn to use the Legacy Family Tree software with new tricks and techniques.

Who's Missing? (Beginner)

I am a typical genealogist. I have a Type A personality and I am uber particular about some things (certainty not all, just take a look at my desk). I like to have one generation completely finished before I move on to the next. Of course in real world genealogy it usually doesn't work out that way. Nice thought though.

There is a nifty tool you can use to show where you are in your "generations" research. Legacy Charting's Half-Fan Chart presents a great visual. You can access this chart from within Legacy itself by going to Reports > Legacy Charting > Fan > Half.

I have my pedigree complete through 6 generations. Having a pedigree complete to at least 6 generations is especially important if you are doing DNA research so if you are working on your DNA matches I suggest you take a look at what you have (or don't have).

I have attached my fan charts for 6 and 7 generations. You can see that I am missing quite a few ancestors at the 7th generation.

This simple chart helps me focus my research efforts. It makes sense to try and finish the 7th generation before going on to the 8th. I like to do periodic "check-ins" using this chart to see where I am in my research.

    Hi Michelle,
Thought this was a great tip/post.
I don’t really regard myself as a beginner, and felt your tip really related to all family genealogists on all levels.
Looking at my own fan chart, I still have alot of gaps to fill!
    Thanks for posting.
    Regards
    Robyn
