Even now, genealogy for underrepresented populations can be considered “impossible.” In this talk you’ll learn which populations are considered so, why that is, and techniques for expanding your genealogical skills. I use Chinese genealogy but the lessons are applicable for all underrepresented genealogical groups.
About the presenter
Linda Yip is an author, researcher, and storyteller who has been invited to speak at businesses and non-profits, colleges and historical societies in Canada and the United States. In 2023, she attended the Senate Commemoration of the Centenary of the Chinese Exclusion Act in Ottawa, the opening of the national Chinese Canadian Museum in Vancouver, and appeared on a panel discussion hosted by the Chinese American Museum (D.C.) and Ancestry. She’s been featured in film, print, radio, and television. She is an entrepreneur with two businesses: THE ADMIN GAP®, creating process solutions for growing businesses; and as a professional genealogist and expert in Chinese Canadian genealogy. She is a member of the Ancestry® Advisory Board of Canadian Genealogists and the Association of Professional Genealogists. Her Level One study of Canada’s first documented Chinese family has been approved by the International Commission for the Accreditation for Professional Genealogists. Her blog, Past-Presence.com, has become a trusted resource with a readership of over 260,000 people worldwide. She is the author of Getting Started in Chinese Genealogy: a family historian’s guide (even if you don’t speak or read Chinese). Linda is a fourth-generation Chinese Canadian descended from the Yip Sang (葉生) family of Vancouver. Yip Sang built the Wing Sang Company, now the home of the Chinese Canadian Museum.
